When is the best time for tree trimming outdoors?
Plants from different genus and species require different maintenance techniques. Tree trimming is best saved for certain seasons depending on the plant.

Deep root zone treatment for compacted soils
Vertical mulching creates vertical channels throughout the root zone, filled with organic matter and amendments. This technique breaks up compacted soil, improves drainage and aeration, and creates pathways for root growth. It's particularly effective for trees suffering from soil compaction in high-traffic areas or sites with heavy clay soils.
We create 2-3 inch diameter holes throughout the root zone in a grid pattern, typically 18-24 inches deep and spaced 2-3 feet apart. These holes are then filled with a mixture of compost, soil amendments, and sometimes coarse sand or pea gravel to maintain drainage channels.
The vertical channels improve air and water penetration deep into the root zone. Roots grow into these amended columns, accessing better soil conditions. Over time, the organic matter helps improve surrounding soil structure, creating lasting benefits beyond the initial treatment.
Our certified arborists evaluate your site to determine if vertical mulching is the best solution. We assess soil conditions, identify compaction severity, locate utilities and irrigation lines, and plan the hole pattern to maximize benefits while avoiding existing root systems and infrastructure.
We use specialized augers or air spading equipment to create the vertical channels. The method depends on site conditions and tree species. Air spading is gentler on roots but more time-intensive, while augering is faster but requires more care to avoid root damage. We select the appropriate method for each situation.
The holes are filled with carefully selected materials based on soil test results and site conditions. Our standard blend includes premium compost for organic matter, mycorrhizal fungi to enhance root function, biochar for long-term soil improvement, and appropriate drainage materials if needed. For severely compacted sites, we may include coarse sand or pea gravel in the lower portion of holes to maintain open channels.
Vertical mulching can be performed throughout the growing season, though we prefer spring or fall when soil moisture is typically adequate. We avoid frozen ground and excessively wet conditions. The treatment provides immediate benefits and continues improving soil conditions over several years as organic matter breaks down.
After vertical mulching, proper watering is important to help amendments settle and begin improving soil structure. We typically recommend repeating the treatment every 3-5 years in severely compacted areas, though many trees show significant improvement after a single treatment combined with reduced traffic and proper mulching.
